What is OEKO-TEX STeP?

STeP by OEKO-TEX® stands for Sustainable Textile and Leather Production and is a modular certification system for production facilities in the textile and leather industry. The aim of STeP is to implement environmentally friendly production processes, improve health and safety in the long term, and promote socially responsible working conditions in production facilities. Target groups for STeP certification are textile and leather manufacturers, brands and retailers.

What does the certificate mean?

STeP differs from other certification systems because instead of considering only individual sustainability aspects, it instead involves a comprehensive analysis and evaluation of production conditions. STeP analyzes all key areas of a company using 6 modules:

Chemical management

environmental performance

Environmental Management

Social responsibility

Quality management

Health protection and safety at work

The aim of STeP certification is the long-term application of environmentally friendly production processes, social working conditions and optimum health and safety.

The clearest answer to the question WHAT IS OEKO TEX is sustainable textile production.

OEKO TEX STEP evaluates, inspects and certifies the following Modules of the textile production chain:

Chemical assessment and management

Environmental performance

environmental management

Social responsibility

Quality management

For Health and Safety performance and management to be eligible for certification, facilities must meet the Criteria set forth in the Modules above. Various ratings can be obtained based on the performance levels defined in the standard, and these are updated periodically. The purpose of the standard is to help manufacturing facilities measure and improve sustainability, environmental performance, health and safety performance, and social responsibility and communicate this to industry and consumers in a transparent and useful format. The textile industry continues its transition from a regional to a global industry. It tries to align it with the main goals and objectives of industry groups working towards greater sustainability in textile production and life cycle.

The normative certification process consists of an evaluation and an audit of data. OEKO TEX certification is obtained after this process and then a certificate and OEKO TEX STEP certificate become official as a result of the reports.

The certificate can only be obtained from textile research and testing institutes and representatives of the OEKO-TEX® Association.
